FACULTY COURSE
12TH – 13TH JUNE 2017
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 7TH JUNE 2017
INTRODUCTORY TRAINING ON FOOD SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
BACKGROUND
Food safety research has traditionally focused on determining the occurrence of hazards in foods and formulating methods/actions to prevent them. However, contemporary approaches require adoption of the risk assessment methodology, which relies on thorough evaluations on the nature of particular food-hazard combinations to make scientific predictions on the likelihoods of their adverse health effects on consumers. This helps to focus policies and strategies aimed at protecting public health as far as food safety is concerned. It is also a requirement in fair international food trade that both exporting and importing countries provide scientific evidence of risk assessments to support claims on the wholesomeness or otherwise of produce. Capacity building in the field of risk assessment is therefore imperative.
OBJECTIVE
This workshop seeks to equip participants with basic knowledge on food safety risk assessment. At the end of the training, it is envisaged that participants will be equipped to:
· differentiate between food safety hazards and food safety risks
· understand the concept of risk assessment
· appreciate the role of risk assessment in public health protection and international food trade
· apply knowledge to plan and write risk profiles
