USAID-GHANA/UNIVERSITY OF GHANA: INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING TO IMPROVE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY AND FOOD SECURITY IN THE CONTEXT OF ECONOMIC POLICY MANAGEMENT IN GHANA

INCREASING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY TO IMPROVE FOOD SECURITY OF THE POPULATION

INTRODUCTION

The USAID/Ghana’s Feed the Future (FtF) strategy concentrates on increasing the competitiveness of rice, maize and soya value chains, given their large share in the agricultural sector and importance in ensuring household income and food security as well as nutritional impacts. Empirical evidence shows that these crops will continue to be the most important driver of agricultural growth, especially in Northern Ghana where there is a greater incidence of poverty.

The USAID Ghana Grant Support to the University of Ghana focuses on capacity building for Agricultural Extension Officers and Farmer-Based Organizations in the Maize, Rice and Soybean Value Chains as well as training scientists on increasing the productivity in the three Northern Regions of Ghana. Training Middle personnel of the Ministry of Finance, Bank of Ghana and National Development Planning Commission in Economic Policy Management to ultimately provide a more congenial business environment for farmers is also an important component of the capacity building aspect of the project. The capacity building program also includes training of graduate students at the Masters and the PhD levels.

This project titled “Institutional Capacity Building to improve Agricultural Productivity and Food Security in the context of Economic Policy Management in Ghana” is to be implemented by the College of Basic and Applied Science and the Department of Economics of the University of Ghana.

The project has two main components: Capacity Building for actors in the rice, maize and soybean value chains and postgraduate (MPHIL and PHD) training.

Under the postgraduate training, the College of Basic and Applied Sciences and the Department of Economics of the University of Ghana hereby announce scholarship positions for the 2015/2016 Academic Year for a 2-Year MPhil and 4-Year PhD Programs.
