Vacancy for Senior Level Administrative Position: Director, Institute of Applied Science and Technology

The University of Ghana, hereby, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Director, Institute of Applied Science and Technology, in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences.

REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Basic and Applied Sciences

The University

The mission of University of Ghana, as defined in its corporate strategic plan, is to create an enabling environment that makes the University increasingly relevant to national and global development through cutting edge research, as well as high quality teaching and learning.
Founded in 1948, University of Ghana is the oldest and largest University in Ghana and is certainly one of the most distinguished universities in Africa.  University of Ghana has a student population of almost 40,000 and employees numbering approximately 6,000, made up of academic and senior administrative employees, as well as other support staff.

Objectives of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences: 
The College shall advance the objectives of each of its constituent Units and by these specific objectives, to:
(a) Develop world-class scientists to meet national and global developmental needs through quality teaching, learning, research, innovation and extension;
(b) Enhance staff capacity through systematic staff development programmes;
(c) Enhance research capabilities of staff for increased output in teaching and publications;
(d) Develop effective processes for public engagement; and,
(e) Create a congenial environment for teaching, research and student learning experiences.

DUTIES
The successful candidate will:

1. Engage key stakeholders and partners (Academia, Industry, Policy-Makers/ Government).

2. Establish and co-ordinate the activities of the multidisciplinary research consortia.

3. Establish and manage incubators used for developing, transforming and up scaling of products/technologies for commercialization.

4. Promote and maintain efficiency and ensure that policies and procedures are followed.

5. Lead curriculum, service and programme design and implementation in collaboration with relevant faculty and departments.

6. Ensure that the mandate, services and programmes of the Institutes are duly carried out.

7. Responsible for the general administration of the Institute in respect of human, financial and material resources within the general framework of University policy.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant must:
(a) Be of professorial status (above the grade of Senior Lecturer) from an academic/research institution or a person from industry eligible for that position.

(b) Be capable of providing academic leadership to the Institute and its affiliated units.

(c) Provide evidence of managerial and administrative leadership and capacity to promote a collegial working environment in the Institute.

(d)  Demonstrate capacity to attract funding for research and development.

(e) Have the vision and the drive to oversee the growth and development of the Institute.

 

TENURE
A Director shall normally hold office for at least three years on terms and conditions recommended by the Appointments Board and is eligible for re-appointment for a further term of up to three years.

ii.         An up to date Curriculum Vitae supported by copies of academic and professional certificates.
