Summary

In addition to producing about 90% of the cellular energy, mitochondria are involved in many cellular processes that are crucial for life. They also play an important role in pharmacology acting as either primary or secondary target for drugs. The aim of this workshop is to discuss recent advances in mitochondrial research with particular emphasis on mitochondrial physiology and function. The workshop will also bring to the fore the important role of mitochondria in natural product research with particular emphasis on medicinal plant research.

The practical skills to be taught include: isolation of mitochondria from different tissues, preparation of tissue fibres, measurement of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation using both simple Clark type and complex high-resolution oxygen electrode.
