UG Launches Safety and Security Champions Initiative to Promote Campus-Wide Vigilance

The University of Ghana has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting a proactive culture of safety and shared responsibility across its campuses. Dubbed the Safety and Security Champions Initiative, the programme is spearheaded by the Safety and Security Services Directorate and is designed to enhance vigilance and resilience among members of the university community.

Speaking at the launch, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo underscored the importance of building a collective mindset around campus security. She noted that while infrastructure such as CCTV systems and electronic access controls are crucial, true safety hinges on the vigilance and commitment of the people within the university.

“We must all embrace the idea that safety is a shared responsibility,” Prof. Amfo said. “It is not only about infrastructure but about nurturing a culture where each member of the community is aware, alert and prepared to act in the interest of all.”

Also addressing the gathering, Pro Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare, highlighted the University’s strategic approach to improving safety on campus. These measures, he explained, include enhanced surveillance systems, electronic access points and a restructuring of the Safety and Security Services Directorate to align with global best practices.

Dr. George Kojo Owusu, Acting CEO of the National Ambulance Service, commended the University for the initiative and discussed the importance of preparedness in an increasingly unpredictable world. He described the collaboration between the University and national emergency services as timely and necessary.

The first cohort of Safety and Security Champions consists of selected students and hall assistants who will be trained to support safety protocols and respond swiftly in emergency situations.

The initiative is part of the University’s broader efforts to create a safe, secure and supportive environment for teaching, learning and personal development.
