68th University of Ghana Annual New Year School and Conference Launched

The 68th Edition of the University of Ghana Annual New Year School and Conference (ANYSC) has been launched at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra. The theme is, "Promoting National Development through Agricultural modernisation: The Role of ICT".

The New Year School and Conference, organised by the School of Continuing and Distance Education under the auspices of the College of Education, is a major annual event of the University of Ghana which provides a common platform for academicians and people of diverse background to deliberate on issues of national interest.  It is expected that the School will focus on improving agricultural yields through the use of modern ICT tools.

In his address,  the Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education, Professor Michael Tagoe mentioned that  for awareness and policy direction in this country, the annual New Year School's themes, have in the last three years, focused on ICT and Education (2014), ICT and Governance (2015) and ICT and Health (2016).  He said the2017 Annual New Year School will combine ICT with agriculture, adding that agriculture has been identified as one of the sectors which spurs Ghana's development because of its direct bearing on industry.  This, he argued, makes the choice of the theme even more relevant.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Mion constituency, Dr. Alhassan Yakubu, in his address, commended the organisers for selecting a theme that was not only relevant to the direction of the country in so far as agriculture is concerned, but was also happy that it fell in his area of interest.  He said, it was imperative that ICT is mainstreamed in agriculture because it accounts for 20.3 percent of the national GDP.
