Academic Affairs Directorate Launches AAD Fitness Regime to Champion Staff Wellness at the University of Ghana

The Academic Affairs Directorate (AAD) of the University of Ghana with support from the Sports and Wellness Directorate has officially launched a Fitness Regime aimed at promoting the health and wellbeing of faculty and staff of the university. The initiative forms part of the university’s third Strategic Priority, which focuses on commitment to faculty and staff welfare.

Speaking at the launch, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) Professor Gordon Awandare commended the Director and staff of the Academic Affairs Directorate for introducing the initiative, describing the health of faculty and staff as critical to the efficient functioning and sustainability of the university. He encouraged participants to remain committed and consistent with the exercise programme, stressing the importance of sustaining healthy habits over time.

The Director of the Academic Affairs Directorate, Mrs. Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, speaking on the theme ‘Stay Active, Stay Excellent,’’ explained that the initiative was introduced in response to the increasing demands of work, which often leave staff with little time to focus on their physical wellbeing.

She noted that prolonged sitting and limited movement had become common among many workers and described the programme as a call to action for staff to intentionally prioritise their health.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Rosina Kyerematen, proposed the establishment of a dedicated gym facility for staff members. According to her, the current university gym often experiences congestion, making it difficult for some staff members to comfortably access workout equipment. She expressed optimism that a staff-only gym would encourage greater participation in fitness activities.
