Careers and Counselling Centre Holds International Educational Fair 2016

Mrs. Jocelene Buckman

The Counselling Centre has held its first Educational Fair at the Institute for Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER) as part of efforts to encourage students to explore and access the centre’s resources.

In her welcome address, the Director of the Careers and Counselling Centre, Mrs. Jocelene Buckman, remarked that students deserve to be exposed to the myriad of educational opportunities available to them at one place, exploit the opportunities and benefits such events offer, and spread the opportunities to their colleagues who could not make it to the fair.

The Coordinator of Student Exchange/Study Abroad Programmes at the International Programmes Office, Mrs. Victoria Baku, in her presentation, outlined the numerous exchange programme opportunities abroad for University of Ghana students and the requirements for accessing those opportunities.  She said  a GPA of 3.0 qualifies a student for such opportunities, and students could study for up to two semesters at universities in Canada, France, and the Czech Republic.   She noted that some collaborative universities waive fees and provide accommodation for students, adding thattogether with the hospitality and warmth, students are able to enjoy such benefits throughout their studies.

Mrs. Baku also mentioned the International Students Exchange Programme (UG-ISEP) as another avenue through which students could pursue self-sponsored educational studies abroad at a reduced cost. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are especially encouraged to use these services. According to Mrs. Baku, students who travel abroad to study, gain valuable experience and exposure. She therefore advised all students to take advantage of such potentially life-changing opportunities, and to share the information they have gained with their fellow students.

There were representatives from academic institutions and related institutions, such as the American University of Cairo, the American University of St. Vincent, the University of Bradford, the University of Aberdeen, the Edkins Training Institute, and Austrade (Australia Trade Commission).  There were also representatives of air-travel services, such as South African Airways and Emirates Airlines, which provided travel information and exhibited special student offers.

A large number of students patronised the two-day Education Fair.
