College of Health Sciences Marks UG@70

The College of Health Sciences has organised a number of activities including a Medical and Dental Outreach at Mantse Agbonaa, Health Walk and Medical Screening at the Accra Mall, and a 2-day Blood Donation Exercise at Korle-Bu as part of activities marking the University’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Medical and Dental Outreach saw the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery and Medicine and Dentistry under the College of Health Sciences, the Eye Centre and the Ear, Nose and Throat Unit (ENT Unit) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital provide medical assistance to natives of James Town and its environs. Approximately 500 persons within the community, including men, women and children were diagnosed and treated. The health personnel seized the opportunity to educate members of the community on some important health issues.

Madam Janet Sackey, a beneficiary of the Outreach, was thankful to the College for coming to support the community. She indicated that the health education given by the personnel on how to care for infants to prevent jaundice was particularly beneficial to her as the remedies they knew usually aggravate the condition.

The College Secretary, Mr. Michael Opare Atuah, stated that it was important for the College to undertake the Medical Outreach in the community within which it operates not only to celebrate the University but also a fulfilment of the College’s corporate social responsibility.

The Health Walk and Medical Screening which coincided with the Health Week Celebration of the Federation of Ghana Medical Students started from the University of Ghana Sports Directorate to the Accra Mall.

Medical Students from the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, Family Health Medical School, Accra College of Medicine, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Health and Allied Sciences participated in the Health Walk and Medical Screening exercises. At the Accra Mall, participants were taken through some aerobic exercises by gym instructors from Decathlon Ghana.

Some patrons of the Mall were screened for blood pressure, Hepatitis B, Malaria and blood grouping.

The blood donation exercise was patronised mainly by approximately eighty-eight (88) students and staff at the Korle-Bu Campus, supported by the National Blood Bank.

The UG @ 70 celebration was launched in February this year with all four Colleges of the University allotted specific months to lead activities for the year-long celebration. The College of Health Sciences took its turn in the month of September.
