College of Humanities Hosts 7th International Research Conference on Bridging Inequalities

The College of Humanities of the University of Ghana has successfully held its 7th International Research Conference on the theme: “Bridging Inequalities in a Changing World: Advancing Inclusive Growth, Resilience and Sustainable Natural Resource Management.”

The three-day event served as a vibrant platform for scholars, policymakers and practitioners to explore innovative strategies for tackling global inequalities through cutting-edge research and sustainable solutions.

In her address at the opening ceremony, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to producing inclusive and impactful research that addresses global challenges with locally relevant solutions. She lauded the choice of theme, describing it as one that aligns with UG’s core values and vision of academic excellence. 

Prof. Amfo further stressed the significance of fostering collaboration and mentorship for emerging scholars as a critical step toward driving inclusive development.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, Chair of the Ghana Statistical Service Board, underscored the urgency of promoting equitable and sustainable economic growth. He acknowledged Ghana’s notable GDP growth over the past three decades but pointed out persistent challenges such as inequality, poverty and youth unemployment. 

Dr. Baah advocated for the formalisation of jobs, stronger social protection systems and fair distribution of natural resources, emphasising the adoption of global best practices in shaping inclusive national policies.

The Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Joseph A. Yaro, reiterated the College’s unwavering commitment to advancing research, teaching and community engagement that respond to pressing global issues. 

He highlighted the critical need to address multiple forms of inequality, including economic, social, cultural, gender-based, technological and environmental, in the pursuit of sustainable development.

The conference brought together participants from various universities within and outside Ghana, alongside senior University officials, faculty, staff and students, creating a robust platform for knowledge sharing and networking.
