IAS Staff And Student Win ASA Student Awards

Nana Amoah Dansowaa, a Senior Research Assistant on study leave at Indiana University and Matthew Claeys, a Graduate Student, both from the Institute of African Studies (IAS), have received the prestigious African Studies Association (ASA) student travel awards that are supported by Royal Air Maroc. The two received the awards at the recently held 57th Annual Meeting of the ASA held in Indianapolis, USA.

 

Nana Dansowaa is currently a Doctoral student in the African American and African Diaspora Studies Programme, with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology.

 

Mathew joined IAS in 2013/14 academic year.  He received his BA in Anthropology and Political Science from the University of Vermont in 2011. He previously participated in a semester’s study abroad programme at UG in 2010.  His Masters thesis at IAS examines issues of mental health and human rights.  Mathew has been the IAS representative to the Graduate student senate, the first international student to be represented on the senate. 

 

While Nana expects to use her grant to travel to Ghana for field work, Matthew anticipates returning to take part in his graduation ceremony and possibly enrolling in a PhD programme.
