Inauguration Of The Alumni Mothers’ Wing At The University Hospital

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has inaugurated the Alumni Mothers’ Wing at the University Hospital. The GH¢450,000.00 facility, an initiative of the University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGAA), was constructed with funds from the Association, alumni, individual and corporate friends of the Association.

Mr. Yankey in his introductory address noted that the Mothers’ Wing will serve as a residential facility for mothers whose children are on admission at the University Hospital.  He said the construction of the facility was made possible through the vision and hard work of the UGAA Council Members. He lauded Mr. & Mrs. (Dr.) Samuel Kwofie, Mr Yaw Gyamfi of PSB Constructions, Mr. Felix Djanie of Mahogany Lodge, Tullow Oil, Ecobank Ghana Ltd. and Enterprise Group for their financial support in the realization of the project.  He also paid glowing tribute to Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, former Vice Chancellor for his instrumental role and professionals at the University’s Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate for their enthusiasm and contribution towards the putting up of the facility.

 

Mr. Yankey called on alumni to consider investing further into the facility to reduce the burden on the Alumni Association.  Alumnus Gibrine Adams, Chief Executive of EPP Books immediately responded to the call and pledged an amount of GH¢20,000 for a 5 bed-room in the facility to be named after his mother, Zainab Alewa.

Dr. Mrs. Joyce Norgbe, Deputy Director of the University Hospital in her remarks expressed the Hospital’s appreciation to the Alumni Association and all who made the edifice possible. She further assured the University Alumni Association of the Hospital’s commitment to maintain the facility.

 

Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice Chancellor

Prof. Oduro Owusu, Vice-Chancellor, expressed his gratitude to the Alumni Association for their contribution to the growth of the University and for providing the hospital with the facility. He also noted that most established institutions of higher learning had their progressive development actively supported by alumni. He therefore called on members of the association to strengthen their networks in order to build closer collaboration with the university.  On the University’s part, the Vice Chancellor promised to maintain a healthy relationship with the Alumni Association, noting that alumni are partners in the development of their alma mater.

The facility was dedicated by Rev. Dr. Abamfo Atiemo, Chairman of the University of Ghana Chaplaincy Board.  After the unveiling of the plaques, Mr. Yankey handed over the keys to Vice Chancellor, symbolising the handing over of the facility to the University.

 

The ceremony was attended by Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, Director of Public Affairs, a former Executive Secretary of the Alumni Association, members of the Alumni Council and representatives from Tullow Oil, and other friends of the University.
