The Lebanese Community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to fourteen (14) deserving students pursuing law at the University of Ghana.

This year’s awards which were presented by His Excellency Ali Halibi, Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, is the fourth set of awards since the scholarship scheme started four years ago.   In his address, His Excellency Ali Halabi exhorted students to exhibit excellence so that the Lebanese community will be justified in injecting resources into their studies. Ambassador Ali Halibi assured students of the commitment of the Lebanese community to support their education and propel them into greatness.

Prof. Daniel Asiedu, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, commended the Lebanese community in Ghana for their benefaction. He was hopeful that the scholarships would encourage students to achieve greater heights.  He appealed to other organisations and stakeholders to extend their support in the area of graduate studies as well as support female students pursuing science and applied sciences programmes.

Prof. Edward Kofi Quashigah, Dean of the School of Law, expressed gratitude to the Lebanese community for its unflinching support for the promotion of education in the country.  The Dean also emphasized the need for the beneficiaries to distinguish themselves and aim at high academic performances as worthy beneficiaries.  He noted that the institution of the scholarships had brought about a level of competition among the students which he said was a good thing.

Earlier, the Head of the Students Financial Aid Office, Mrs. Christiana Baning, noted that the selection exercise for the awards started at the level of the School of Law, and was a merit-based scholarship.  She was thankful to Ambassador Halibi for his personal commitment in ensuring that the scholarship was sustained, and extended appreciation to the Lebanese community for supporting the students.

In brief remarks, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, Director of Public Affairs, while thanking Ambassador Halabi for the pioneering role played in mobilizing funds for the scholarships, encouraged the students to consider specialization and move into other areas of law, such as corporate law, environmental law, etc. instead of looking only at litigation, as these areas are also badly required for the development of the country.

Mr. Kafui Quashigah, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to the Lebanese community for the support.  Mr. Quashigah assured their benefactors of their commitment to studies and promised to continue to strive for excellence as expected of them.

He noted that beyond the scholarship, the Lebanese community has also enrolled some of the beneficiaries of the scholarship at Alliance Française in Accra with the view to strategically position the students for the job market.
