The Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID) with the School of Engineering Sciences (SES) has held a presentation session to mark the celebration of the 2018 World Intellectual Property Day on the theme “Powering change: women in innovation and creativity”. The day which is marked on April 26 each year affords an opportunity to discuss the role of intellectual property rights in promoting creativity and innovation. This year’s celebrations provided the opportunity to enhance awareness on intellectual property within the University community.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, Prof. Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, identified three issues of importance for which awareness on intellectual property is crucial. He noted that requisite knowledge on intellectual property can safeguard researchers and institutions from losing their assets citing his personal experiences as well as cases involving some public institutions with respect to specific commercial products.
Director of Research, ORID, Prof. George Obeng Adjei
The Director of Research at ORID, Professor George Obeng Adjei, in brief remarks indicated that the decision to hold the event for the faculty and students of the School of Engineering Sciences was as a result of the School’s potential to generate intellectual property that could be commercialized. According to him, one of three patent applications filed by the University has been granted, with the two pending applications from the School of Engineering Sciences.
Presentations on industry engagement and intellectual property were delivered by Mrs. Mammie Hutchful Nortey and Mrs. Diana A. Owusu Antwi respectively. Overall, the event provided the opportunity for a total of thirty (30) participants comprising faculty and students of SES and staff of ORID to interact on university-industry engagement, intellectual property rights and the technology commercialization process.
