Registrar Supports Phase Two of Staff Village Residents’ Association’s ‘Green Ghana Project’ with 100 Coconut Seedlings

Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, has donated 100 coconut seedlings in support of phase two of the Staff Village Residents’ Association 'Green Ghana Project'. She joined the association in the planting exercise, which took place at various locations at the Staff Village.

This follows Phase one, where Staff Village residents planted about 200 coconut seedlings as part of the initiative in June 2024. The project aims to protect the University's ecosystem while providing food and medicine for the residents.

Mrs. Agyei-Mensah commended the residents for their dedication to the project while expressing her joy at the opportunity to support and take part in such a worthy initiative.

She encouraged them to keep a good maintenance culture and assured them of Management's continued support for future initiatives.

Chairman of the Staff Village Residents Association, Mr. Desmond Tweneboanah pledged to ensure that the seedlings will be well-nurtured to ensure that they grow well.

In an interview with UG’s Public Affairs Directorate News Desk, Mr. Tweneboanah explained that, “The desire to plant the coconuts arose when the University of Ghana hosted the Green Ghana project in 2023.”

He added that residents were sensitised on the benefits of planting the coconut seedlings and they embraced the idea, with each household planting one seedling.

Mr. Tweneboanah mentioned that leadership of the Association will carry out periodic checks to ensure the plants are being well-nurtured and provide assistance to households encountering challenges with maintenance.  He expressed hope that in a few years, the plants would flourish, creating a greener university environment and providing food for the residents.

Mr. Isaac Agyei, Vice-Chairman of the Association also speaking with UG’s Public Affairs Directorate News Desk highlighted the health benefits of coconuts and their aesthetic appeal with tall, slender trunk and graceful fronds.

Mrs. Joy Akorfah Darko, a resident and Treasurer of the Association, praised the initiative, noting that “this exercise is significant, given that Ghana is going green.” She urged staff who had not yet planted their seedlings to do so and encouraged them to take good care of the plants.

Mr. Reinhold Senyo, a resident and supervisor of the project, expressed gratitude to the Registrar for the support and also for availing herself for the exercise. He applauded leadership of the Association for their foresight while being hopeful for more collaboration between the University’s management and the Association.

This latest contribution brings the total number of coconut seedlings purchased and planted in the area to 300. Also present during the exercise were the Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Mrs. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah and some residents.
