UG Holds 2014 Matriculation For Newly Admitted Students

The University of Ghana over the weekend held a Matriculation ceremony to welcome over 7,000 newly admitted students into programmes on the Legon, Korle Bu and Accra City Campuses.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, urged the new students to take inspiration from the good people they meet during their years of study and work hard to achieve all their dreams. He admonished them to honour the sacrifice of their parents, sponsors and guardians by behaving responsibly and making the best of the opportunity they have. He further cautioned the new students to create a balance between their social and academic lives.

 Prof. Aryeetey noted that for the 2014/2015 academic year the university received a total of 37,326 applications, 30,083 undergraduate and 7,243 graduate applications. Out of this number, the university was able to offer admission to 14,883 applicants made up of 11,944 undergraduate and 2,939 graduate students, out of which a total of 7,275 had registered. A total of 1,550 international students of various nationalities have been admitted into various programmes, made up of 449 undergraduate students and 1,101 graduate students.

Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia, Registrar

Earlier in a statement of welcome, the Registrar of the University, Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia, briefed the new students on the significance of the ceremony. She added that another Matriculation ceremony will be held for students in the Distance Education Programme, sandwich programmes and other programmes which start in the second semester.  She later administered the Matriculation Oath.

Miss. Rukaya Moro from the School of Law, spoke on behalf of the Matriculants. She prevailed on her colleagues to stay away from illegal activities and remain focused. Ms. Moro signed the Matricula on behalf of her colleagues.

The Matriculation ceremony was attended by Officials of the University including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development (RID), Prof. John O. Gyapong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic & Student Affairs, Prof. S. Kwame Offei, Provosts, Deans and Directors, Heads of Departments and Halls as well as other members of Convocation. Hon. Emmanuel Kwabena Agyarko, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, where the University is located, also witnessed the ceremony.
