UG Signs MOU With Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS)

The University of Ghana and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) have signed a general memorandum of understanding (MOU) covering student and faculty exchanges, research collaboration and joint curriculum development for furthering studies of Japanese and African cultures.

The student package for Ghanaian students visiting Japan is expected to include a full tuition waiver, accommodation, and living expenses. The MOU will also enable the two universities to engage in further discussions to foster faculty collaboration in key areas of International Relations, Modern Languages, Political Science, Economics and African Studies within the College of Humanities.

The International Programmes Office, led by the Dean, Professor Ama de-Graft Aikins, facilitated the development of the MOU and meetings between a delegation from TUFS and a number of departments of the University of Ghana.

Discussions were held between TUFS delegates and Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, Provost of College of Humanities, Dr. Lloyd G. Adu Amoah, Acting Director of the Centre for Asian Studies, Dr. Eric Asare Bossman, Head and other members of the Department of Political Science, and Dr. Godfred Alufar Bokpin, Head of the Department of Banking and Finance, University of Ghana Business School.    

Professor Minoru Iwasaki, Vice President of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies assured the Provost of the College of Humanities that the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, will support the newly established Centre for Asian Studies within the College of Humanities.  To start off, a Japanese proficiency course could be developed and offered at the Centre for Asian Studies to University of Ghana students. Professor Iwasaki also explained that the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies is developing a new Centre for Contemporary African Studies and hopes to make Ghana one of the key founding partners of the Centre to promote active research collaboration. 

In a brief signing ceremony, held on Friday 16th September 2016, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Kwame Offei, expressed the University's support of the partnership and his anticipation for active research collaboration between the two Universities in the humanities and African Studies. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Dean of International Programmes, Professor Ama de-Graft Aikins, Dr. Kazue Demachi Nakase of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Mr. Daniel Hormeku, Assistant Registrar, International Programmes, Mrs. Jemima Yakah Amoah of the Agricultural Extension Department and other University of Ghana staff.
