UGBS Crowned Champions of TBSC Version 6.0

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) has won the prestigious Graphic Business Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC). This is the first time a tertiary institution in the Greater Accra Region has won the contest. The competition, which is the sixth of its kind, was held at the GNAT Hall in Accra.

The UGBS team, comprising the most outstanding students of this year's contest, Peter Emeka Ike, Edwin Entsiey, Jonathan Nii Nai Sowah and Prince Ascod Bordoh, demonstrated remarkable composure and intelligence, especially during the theory session where they scored 13 points, far ahead of their rivals KNUST and UEW.

Following months of fierce competition among 36 of the nation's best tertiary business schools, debutants in the final, UGBS won with a remarkable score of 86.8 points, outdoing strong competitors, including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who secured second place with 73.5 points, and defending champions University of Education Winneba (UEW), which placed third with 72.5 points.

Despite facing a tough challenge from KNUST in the fifth round, UGBS maintained their lead and ultimately clinched their first TBSC trophy. UGBS's early lead set the tone for their victory, showcasing their ability to thrive under pressure.

Expressing his excitement about the win, Prof. Justice Bawole, Dean of UGBS, indicated that when the competition started, it was solely being organised by the students. However, the School relalised the seriousness other business schools attached to it and got faculty involved, while also providing logistical and financial support for the team and their coaches.

“This year, we showed them that we are the best and will dominate going forward. We have decided to incentivise the winning team with scholarships and cash prizes to motivate future contestants.”

Speaking about the significance of the team’s achievements with the Public Affairs Directorate News Desk, trainer Daniel Owusu Amponsah, stressed that the victory “has really enhanced the image of the UG Business School”.

“It has also helped the students become bolder and more confident. Their soft skills have improved because they do case study presentations. The platform has also provided participants with networking and internship opportunities as well as job placement,” he added.

To win this year’s competition, Mr. Amponsah revealed the students thoroughly practised and solved numerous questions covering all syllabus content. They were highly spurred to win the competition, determined to make themselves proud and win all that was at stake. The focus of the team was on “practising, preparing, enhancing composure and teamwork”.

Each member of the winning team received a range of prizes, including HP laptops, gold medals and an insurance cover worth GHC 20,000. In addition to their championship title, UGBS also claimed the trophy for the Southeast Zonal Champions. Other consolation prizes included a GHS 2500 fuel coupon.

The coaches for the UGBS team include Michael Mensah and Emmanuel Agyei with Prof. Elikplimi Komla Agbloyor and Dr. Emmanuel Joel Aikins Abakah as team patrons.

The competition, which is made up of two stages, zonal and national levels, focused on business related areas such as Accounting, Finance, Economics, Marketing, HR among others. The zonal level is divided into four zones: the Northern Zone, Middle Zone, Southeastern Zone and Southwestern Zone.
