UGBS Lecture Hall Project Progresses as Vice-Chancellor and Outgoing Dean Assess Construction Works

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has conducted an inspection of ongoing works on the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) Lecture Hall Phase II project, accompanied by the outgoing Dean of UGBS, Prof. Justice Bawole.

The visit forms part of the University’s commitment to improving teaching and learning infrastructure in line with its strategic priority of enhancing the student experience. The environmentally friendly building, which began construction in July 2023, is expected to be completed by September 2025.

The new facility is designed to accommodate lecture theatres, office spaces, e-learning centres, a nursery, washrooms and other auxiliary amenities. One of its most remarkable features is a lattice roof, the first of its kind in Ghana, aimed at naturally cooling the courtyards and internal spaces by providing strategic shading.

Speaking during the inspection, Prof. Amfo commended Grow Engineering and Construction, as well as the consultants on the project, for the quality of work and notable progress made. She applauded the incorporation of sustainable architectural designs, energy-efficient systems and enhanced accessibility for persons with disabilities.

“This is an impressive structure that clearly reflects our vision of promoting sustainability and inclusivity in our infrastructure development,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

For his part, Prof. Bawole, who initiated the project during his tenure as Dean, expressed his satisfaction with the work done so far and described the building as “iconic.” He urged the contractors to stick to the project timelines to ensure the facility is completed and commissioned as scheduled.

Architect Augustus Richardson, who is leading the design, explained that the unique lattice roof was developed for its aesthetic value and to improve the building's energy performance by supporting passive cooling.

The UGBS Lecture Hall Phase II project is part of broader efforts by the University to expand academic infrastructure and create a more conducive and inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff.
