uniBank Supports The 2016 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures

uniBank Ghana Limited has made a donation of $32,000.00 to the University of Ghana in support of the 2016 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures to be held from March 21st to 23rd. The 3-day lecture which is on the theme “Fighting Political Domination” will be delivered by the distinguished Professor of Political Science, Ian Shapiro from the Yale University, United States of America.

Presenting the cheque to Prof. Aryeetey, Vice-Chancellor, the Head of New Business at uniBank, Mr. Richard Osei Anane, said Unibank has supported the lectures for the past three years because the bank appreciates the important role the University plays in the development of human resource capital of the country. He assured of the University of the bank’s continued support for the lectures which he noted creates a platform for the University Community to share ideas with industry and policy makers on topical national and international issues.

The Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana, Mrs. Stella Amoa, was thankful to uniBank for honouring their pledge to sponsor the Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg lecture series annually. The support, she noted would facilitate arrangements for successful lectures.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, in his remarks expressed excitement about the bank’s pledge to support the University towards the Lectures. He noted that the University attaches great importance to the Lectures, which for more than five decades, have been designed to introduce to the University Community and the public, world-class speakers to share views on African development.

Prof. Aryeetey noted that the theme for this year’s lectures, Fighting Political Domination was particularly relevant to Ghana as the nation prepares for elections this year and hoped that the lecture would proffer some tangible suggestions on how to strengthen our democracy. Prof. Aryeetey also acknowledged the cordial relationship between the University and uniBank Ghana Limited and looked forward to many more collaborations in the future. 

Present at the ceremony were the Director of Finance of the University of Ghana, Mr. Richard Boapea, the Director of Academic Affairs at the University, Mr. Enoch A. Amartey, the Head of E-business at uniBank, Mrs. Gifty Blay and Nana Akua Nkansah, Esteem Banking, uniBank.

The Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures were instituted in 1957 to commemorate the contributions made to the founding of Achimota College and the advancement of education, particularly higher education during the colonial era by James Kwegyir Aggrey  a native of Anomabu who was a great African visionary and spokesman for racial harmony and equality, Alexander G. Fraser the First Principal of Achimota School, a courageous and far-sighted Scottish educationist who had a firm belief in the educational potential of the African, and Gordon Guggisberg, a governor of the Gold Coast,who against many odds and at great personal sacrifice developed the economic capacity of the country and created an educational system that empowered the African to lead.
