University Basic School Celebrates Excellence at 63rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day

The University Basic School (UBS), Legon, has celebrated its 63rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day, honouring academic achievement and institutional growth under the theme "Advancing the Transformative Basic Education for Global Impact."

Held on the school's campus, the event brought together staff, parents, pupils, alumni and well-wishers to mark another milestone in the school's legacy since its establishment in 1955.

Delivering the academic report, Acting Head of the School, Mr. Eric Sifa, highlighted the importance of equipping learners with 21st-century skills to prepare them for a fast-changing world. He commended the graduating class of 2025 for their resilience and hard work throughout the academic year.

The Registrar of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, congratulated the award-winning students and encouraged those who were not recognised to keep striving. “Continue to work harder at school,” she said, “and put your shoulders to the wheel so that you can be celebrated in the years ahead.”

The Guest of Honour, Mr. Robin J. Dunn, an alumnus from the school’s pioneer year group, reflected on the school's evolution over the decades. Describing UBS as “a profound influence” in shaping his academic and personal journey, Mr. Dunn urged students to maximise the opportunities available to them. In a generous gesture, he donated $12,000 towards the construction of a modern science laboratory for the school.

Awards were presented to outstanding students across various categories, with Godfred Amoah Jnr., from the graduating class of 2025, emerging as the overall Best Student.

The event also featured lively performances from UBS students, showcasing their creativity and school pride.

The 63rd anniversary celebration reaffirmed UBS’s commitment to nurturing future-ready learners and delivering a transformative educational experience rooted in excellence and impact.
