University of Ghana Receives Africa Heritage Award for Academic Excellence
The University of Ghana has been honoured with the Africa Heritage Award for Academic Excellence at the African Heritage Awards (AHA) 2026, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to higher education, research and national and continental development.
The awards ceremony, held on April 11, 2026, at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, was organised by Afri-Heritage and Heritage Times Media to celebrate and bring together influential African innovators, institutions and entrepreneurs who are intentionally driving the continent towards greatness. Driven by the private sector, the fourth edition of the awards recognised individuals and institutions making meaningful impact while promoting Africa’s heritage.
The University was cited for its far-reaching impact in higher education, its legacy of shaping generations of leaders and its sustained commitment to advancing knowledge for national and continental development.
The citation also highlighted the University’s strong academic and research ecosystem, anchored by its collegiate structure, institutes and centres, with contributions in key areas such as malaria research, climate change adaptation, food security and quality management.
Receiving the award on behalf of the University, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed appreciation to the organisers, noting that the recognition reflects the collective efforts of generations of students, faculty and staff.
“We would want to thank the African Heritage Awards for this recognition. This award is dedicated to generations of students of the University of Ghana, as well as staff and faculty who have remained committed to the mission and vision of the University over the years,” Prof. Amfo said.
She added that the award serves as motivation for the University to continue delivering quality training, impactful research and meaningful engagement. “This recognition propels us to continue doing what we do best; training, research and engagement that impact our communities and contribute to the change we seek on the continent,” the Vice-Chancellor noted.
The Special Guest of Honour, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, encouraged award recipients to continue striving for excellence and to inspire others through their work. He also commended the organisers for bringing the awards to Ghana and for recognising outstanding institutions and individuals across the continent.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amfo was accompanied to the event by the Pro Vice-Chancellor responsible for Research, Innovation and Development, Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante; the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah; the Director of Public Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah; as well as executives of the University’s GRASAG and SRC.
