Vice-Chancellor Commends Prof. George Armah for His International Recognition as the Only African Recipient of the Rotavirus Champion Award

Retired UG Scholar, Professor George Armah, has presented the Rotavirus Champion Award he recently received to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, when he recently called on her. Out of the eight award recipients, Prof. Armah was the only honouree from Africa.

The award, conferred at the 15th International Rotavirus Symposium held from 30th  September, 2025 to 2nd  October, 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa by the Global Rotavirus Society, recognises Professor Armah’s outstanding contributions to rotavirus prevention and control, his impact on improving child health and his commitment to strengthening global health systems.

In presenting the award, Prof. Armah expressed his gratitude to the University of Ghana for providing a supportive academic environment that enabled his research and collaborations over the years.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amfo, congratulated Prof. Armah for his consistency and dedication, which have earned international recognition for the University through his pioneering work in rotavirus research over the past 40 years.

She noted that this achievement reflects the University’s Second Strategic Priority, Impactful Research. ‘The consistency has paid off. Millions of lives have been saved, the cost of hospitalisation has been saved and even more significantly, the relief for mothers,’ she added.
