UG Scales Up Scholarship Support with 1,358 Beneficiaries and New Funding Schemes to Expand Access to Education

The University of Ghana has scaled up its scholarship support with the award of 1,358 scholarships to new and continuing students for the 2025/2026 academic year. The award is in line with its strategic priority of delivering a transformative student experience under the University’s 2024–2029 Strategic Plan and expanding access to higher education.

This builds on decades of sustained institutional commitment to supporting brilliant but financially challenged students through scholarships and financial aid.

At a recent event to present the awards at the Great Hall, university leadership, donors and beneficiaries gathered to highlight the impact of sustained partnerships in widening access to education.

The scholarship package, administered by the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO), underscores efforts to ensure that no qualified student is denied the opportunity to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, described the awards as a demonstration of sustained partnership in advancing educational opportunity. He noted that the SFAO, established over two decades ago, has supported more than 10,000 students since its inception.

The Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, stated that under the University’s internal sponsorship scheme, 277 awards were renewed while 10 new students were added to the list of beneficiaries. She acknowledged the continued support of partners, including the University of Ghana Alumni Association North America (UGAANA), SRC Yi Bi Boa, Educational Partnerships International and other donors.

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed deep appreciation to donors for their sustained commitment to supporting student scholarships, noting that their contributions have consistently expanded access to education and transformed lives.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Vice-Chancellor urged them to repay the confidence reposed in them by committing themselves to their studies and striving for academic excellence. She further encouraged them to take advantage of internships and other opportunities available at the University to enhance their skills and prepare for future careers.

Also part of the programme was an experience sharing session, which provided beneficiaries the opportunity to share their experiences and reflect on the impact of the scholarship scheme.

During the session, Mr. Mohamed Sadi, a valedictorian of the School of Agriculture and Best Male Graduating Student in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the February 2026 Congregation ceremonies, recounted how scholarship support enabled him to complete his studies despite financial challenges.
