School of Languages Commemorates a Decade of Language Education
The School of Languages is celebrating its 10th anniversary on the theme, “A Decade of Language Education: Celebrating Milestones and Mapping the Future.”
At a ceremony to launch the anniversary celebration, the Dean of the School, Professor Josephine Dzahene-Quarshie, noted that the celebration provided an opportunity for the School to reflect, learn from past mistakes and prepare for the future, while fostering bonds among all stakeholders. She highlighted the School’s support to research through various grant awards, resulting in numerous publications and career advancements of faculty.
Prof. Dzahene-Quarshie announced the establishment of the graduate common room at the Kojo Senanu Arts and Languages Building as well as future plans to strengthen graduate programmes, enhance interdisciplinary research, adopt innovative teaching methods and expand partnerships. She also highlighted that the School aspires to excel in language and cultural studies, foster global understanding and embrace technological advancements in teaching and research.
She said with funding approved for necessary structural work and furnishing, the School is also preparing to relocate its secretariat to the Kojo Senanu Arts and Languages Building.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who is a former Dean of the School, acknowledged the collective efforts of individuals that have made the anniversary worth celebrating.
“Looking to the future, I am optimistic about the School of Languages' potential to expand its impact through collaboration, research and community engagement. I encourage all stakeholders to uphold the values of excellence, inclusivity and innovation,” she said.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the establishment of the graduate common room will provide space for collaboration and intellectual exchanges. With the initiative aligning with the University of Ghana's five-year strategic plan, she said she was hopeful for support from all University Units and the School.
Mr. Sampson Lardy Anyenini, Esq., an alumnus, who was the Guest of Honour, reminisced about the excitement he experienced when he was admitted to the University of Ghana and reflected on the rigorous academic journey at the Department of English. He emphasised the importance of reading and dedication in achieving success.
Mr. Anyenini. Esq. acknowledged the distinguished faculty and the impact of the School of Languages on his legal career. He urged the audience to contribute to making language studies more attractive and called for support for the School, to enable it become a recognized name in that regard. He congratulated the school on its achievements and pledged 10,000 Cedis to support the completion of the graduate common room.
Mr. Kwaku Amponsah, School Administrator, who delivered welcome remarks at the launch stated that the celebration aims to commemorate a decade of existence and honour the contributions of all who played remarkable roles in the School.
The ceremony featured performances by the French Students Association, El Club Hispanico and Swahili Students’ Association.
Dr. Abdoulaye Imorou and Mr. Luke Liebzie delivered the vote of thanks and opening prayer, respectively.
Activities marking the anniversary celebration include an anniversary dinner and awards night, a career fair and student forum as well as a cultural and food bazaar.
