Maiden Central Administration Staff Awards Recognises Excellence at UG

11 outstanding staff have been recognised for their exceptional service, innovation and leadership at the maiden Central Administration Staff Awards. The awards categorised into senior member, senior staff and junior staff awards, underscores UG’s commitment to staff and faculty and promotes a culture of excellence across all levels of administration.  

For the Senior Member category, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Academic Affairs Directorate, Mr. Frederick Yuorkuu was adjudged Best Senior Member (Administrator) while Assistant Librarian at the Balme Library, Mr. Kwesi Gyesi emerged the Best Senior Member (Professional)

The Senior Staff awardees included Principal Administrative Assistant at the Human Resource & Organisational Development Directorate (HRODD), Mr. Samuel Asare, as Best Senior Staff (Administrative);  Principal Accounting Assistant at the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, RID, Mr. Ibrahim Agyemang as Best Senior Staff (Accounting); Chief Nursing Officer at the University Health Services Directorate, Mrs. Mandela Abla Hiamey as Best Senior Staff (Health Service); ICT Assistant at the Information Technology Directorate, Mr. Evans Narh, as Best Senior Staff (IT); and Principal Procurement Assistant at the Logistics Directorate, Mr. Edwin Richard Tetteh, as Best Senior Staff (Logistics). 

In the Junior Staff category, Senior Clerk at the Academic Affairs Directorate, Mr. Charles Oppong Dei, emerged Best Junior Staff (Administrative); Tradesman Grade I at the Academic Affairs Directorate, Mr. Joshua Kwesi Fosu received the Best Junior Staff (Artisan) award; Cleaner at the Logistics Directorate, Mr. Eric Boateng was awarded Best Junior Staff (Cleaner) while Senior Ward Assistant at the University Health Services Directorate, Ms. Millicent Afriyie walked home as the Best Junior Staff (Health Service). 

They each received a plaque, a citation and an amount of money.  

Chairing the ceremony on behalf of the VC, Pro-VC(ASA), Prof. Gordon Awandare commended the recipients, stating, “We recognise your exceptional work and hope that this award inspires you to continue setting high standards and mentoring others.”

Prof. Awandare added that ‘this is consistent with our Strategic Priority 3 ‘Commitment to Faculty and Staff’, which highlights efforts in recognising the work of our employees.’ He acknowledged the hard work and commitment of staff, encouraging those who were not nominated for awards not to be discouraged but to keep working hard, as only a few had to be selected.  

In congratulating the awardees, Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah remarked, “Your dedication embodies the values of UG and is instrumental in advancing our mission and vision.”  

“By recognising and rewarding excellence, we demonstrate our commitment to investing in our human capital, which is essential for achieving our Strategic Objectives. We also seek to encourage and promote a culture of innovation, teamwork and continuous improvement among our staff,” she added. The Registrar further explained that these awards, alongside those hosted at the four colleges, contribute to a larger university-wide initiative to honour deserving staff.

Senior Assistant Registrar at HRODD and Planning Committee member Ms. Regina Enyonam Adagbedu, explained the rigorous selection process behind the awards.  

She intimated that the University's Staff Awards Policy launched in May 2024, led to the formation of a committee responsible for developing selection criteria. The committee, in consultation with the Registrar, created categories and issued a call for nominations. 

The criteria were based on the University’s core values, attitude towards work, work delivery, and performance appraisals from the previous three years. A total of 32 applications were reviewed, with awardees selected according to merit. 

On behalf of the awardees, Mr. Frederick Yuorkuu, thanked management for acknowledging their hard work and commitment which reaffirms the University’s investment in its staff.
