Second UG Corporate Football League Officially Launched
The second edition of the UG Corporate Football League has been launched with 18 teams expected to face off in a highly competitive football league. The launch brought together university management, participating institutions and partners.
Building on the success of the inaugural 2025 season, this year’s league has expanded participation and a renewed focus on staff wellness, institutional collaboration and corporate engagement.
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Sports and Wellness Directorate, Dr. Austin Luguterah reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to making corporate sports a sustainable wellness programme.
He urged institutions, management and directorates to “see this league as an opportunity to build relationships beyond office work and to explore collaborations that yield mutual academic, administrative and social benefits.”
He also expressed confidence that the 2026 season will surpass the excitement of the first, with enhanced prizes, stronger partnerships and a continued emphasis on sportsmanship, fairness, and community building.
In her keynote address, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo stressed that sports complements education and work. “When colleagues swap boardrooms for jerseys, they learn about collaboration and teamwork, which they then take back to the boardrooms,” she said.
“As we begin the second edition, let us commit to showcasing the best of what sports can be” adding that players should play well and be the ambassadors of the university’s values.
Representing the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Fred Awaah, Board Chair of the National Sports Authority emphasised that true victory lies in participation. “You may not win the trophy,” he said, “but you gain a healthier workforce, improved morale, stronger teamwork, better mental well-being and increased productivity. Participation itself is the true victory.”
He urged more institutions to join, describing sports and recreation as essential solutions to sedentary lifestyles and work-related stress.
The Registrar, Mrs Emelia Agyei-Mensah praised the participation of UG staff in the first edition. “Having seen what we are capable of doing, it’s going to be even better this time around,” she noted, while urging continued growth as a long-term tradition that strengthens staff commitment and external partnerships.
A representative of the defending champions, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) affectionately known as the “men in green” confidently reminded the gathering that his team had been underrated in the inaugural edition yet still emerged victorious. “We are not bragging,” he declared, “but all we are saying is that the bar is set. Let’s see who rises up to the challenge.”
The Director of Marketing for the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Mr. George Lomotey, speaking on behalf of the Director-General and GTV Sports+, reaffirmed the media house’s commitment to broadcast all matches live and replay highlights extensively, ensuring wide national reach.

The event featured a live balloting session led by the CEO of Rite Sports Services, Yaw Sakyi Afari to determine group placements of the teams in the various matches.
Matches will be played on Fridays at University of Ghana venues, with opening games scheduled for Friday 13th February 2026 with live coverage on GTV Sports+.
