Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo

Vice Chancellor

Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, PhD, FGA, is the (first female) Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. She is a Professor of Linguistics and an experienced university administrator, with over 21 years’ experience in the higher education sector.

Professor Amfo has built her experience in governance through attendance of formal management and leadership programs as well as on the job training. She brings a lot of innovation and resourcefulness to her leadership positions and is adept at change management. As Vice-Chancellor, she’s leading her university to uptake technology in all its operations, while keeping people as the focus. As part of the execution of her vision, she launched a seven-million-dollar digitalization program to enhance the experience of the University’s students, faculty and staff.

Professor Amfo previously served as the Pro Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean of the School of Languages, and the Head of the Department of Linguistics, of the same university. Her masters and PhD degrees, both in linguistics, are from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and her Bachelors in French and Linguistics is from the University of Ghana.

She is a member of many prestigious societies and organizations such as the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Commonwealth Professionals Fellowship, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, German Academic Exchange Services, and the International Women’s Fellowship Leadership Program. She is a pioneer fellow of the African Humanities Program (AHP) of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). She currently serves as the inaugural President of the African Humanities Association, an offshoot of the AHP.

Her national and international board membership include the following: Consultation Board Member of the International Pragmatics Association; Assistant Secretary-General of the Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes; Administrative Board Member of the International Association of Universities; Steering Committee Member of the Tallories Network of Engaged Universities, Chairperson of the Interim Executive Committee of the African Pragmatics Association and Governing Council Member of the Sustainable Development Solution Network.

In 2021, Professor Amfo was awarded as the GUBA (Grow Unite Build Africa) Nana Yaa Asantewaa Woman of Enlightenment for her resilience and work in academia which has created knowledge, built confidence and broken-down barriers to opportunities. In July 2023, She was recognised by Glitz Africa as the Ghana Woman of the Year for Excellence in Education.

Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah

Alumni Representative

 Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah is an experienced Journalist and Communication Expert; and is a veteran broadcaster with over 40 years’ experience in Public Relations, Media and Marketing Consulting.  

 She is the Chief Executive Officer of Babywalk Company Limited and Babywalk Pre-School. She received a Presidential Award – the 2008 Grand Medal for her contribution to media practice in Ghana.  

 An alumna of the University of Ghana, and of Volta Hall, Ms. Ansah was elected the Chairperson of the University of Ghana Alumni Association in 2022 and serves as the alumni representative on the University of Ghana Governing Council. 

Major Daniel Sowa Ablorh-Quarcoo (Rtd)

Council Appointee

Major Daniel Sowa Ablorh-Quarcoo is a chartered management accountant. He served as Chairman of Ghana's Public Interest and Accountability Committee, as well as on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana. In 2006, he was appointed as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). During his tenure, he assisted five other African Commissioners in establishing the African Tax Administration Forum. Prior to joining the IRS, he served ten years (1994-2004) as Director of Finance for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), building on six previous years’ experience as a management accountant with COCOBOD. Prior to this time, he served eleven years as a Paymaster with the Ghana Armed Forces. 

He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Ghana Business School.

He chairs the University’s Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe

Council Appointee

Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe has extensive professional experience in the field of ICT with significant executive leadership accomplishments in driving business growth for well over two decades. Yvette is the Chief Executive Officer of Dimension Data Ltd., a global systems integrator and managed service provider. She is recognized as an influential leader in the industry. 

She is accomplished in establishing world class client-centric teams and processes for successful multi-national ICT start-ups in Africa including Accelon, Africa Online, Celltel and IS Internet Solutions.  

She is currently the Board Chairperson of Petra Trust and, serves as director on the board of Access Bank Ghana and Internet Solutions Mozambique.  

Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe is passionate about the advancement of women and girls in ICT. 

Dr. George Agyekum Nana Donkor

Council Appointee

Dr. George Agyekum Donkor is the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), a regional international financial institution belonging to the fifteen ECOWAS Member States. Prior to this, he had served in various other capacities in EBID and in other corporate institutions. 

A lawyer and a development banker by training, Dr. Donkor’s career, which spans close to three decades, has been marked by implementing change to drive progress not only in the West Africa sub-region and also stimulating a wider international impact through regional integration and engagement.  

Dr. Donkor is recipient of many awards including the 2022 Prix de la Fondation award and Ghana Innovation Leadership Award 2019. He was recently named by Financial Afrik as one of 100 personalities who are transforming Africa.  

Ms. Tina Sackeyfio

Council Appointee

Ms. Tina Sackeyfio is a seasoned and dedicated Human Resources practitioner with over 22 years of working experience as a generalist in Human Resource Management. She is a Senior Human Resources Business Partner for Stanbic Bank Ghana, and is recognized for building productive relationships through effective stakeholder engagement, advisory support, coaching, recruitment, talent acquisition and performance management at all levels. She is an alumnus of the University of Ghana, holds an MBA in Human Resources from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom, and is a Certified Professional in Transformative Coaching from the Coach Masters Academy. 

Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho

Convocation Representative (Teaching)

Professor Nana Akua Anyidoho is Director of the Centre for Social Policy Studies at the University of Ghana.  She has extensive experience in research, teaching, community development and policy engagement.  

Prof. Anyidoho’s research is broadly in social policy and social development. She is interested in how young people and women, as marginalized social groups, interact with policy processes and structures in pursuit of their visions of development. Thus, her research frequently explores themes of participation, inclusion, agency, and empowerment. 

Professor Anyidoho has served in various capacities on bodies such as the Ghana Studies Association, the Executive Committee of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), and the Board of Directors, of the African Studies Association (ASA). 

She is one of the Convocation representatives on the University of Ghana Council.  

Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah

Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah is a Chartered Tax Accountant with over 30 years’ experience in accountancy practice. 

He has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors and has, since 2006 worked with the University of Ghana. He is currently College Finance Officer in the University’s College of Education.  

He is President of the University of Ghana branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and is one of the Convocation representatives on the University of Ghana Governing Council.

Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola

Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos

Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is an accomplished clinical microbiologist, and has been on the faculty of the University of Lagos since 2008. Her research interest has centered mainly around the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases as well as antibiotic resistance. She served as the first female Provost of the College of Medicine and the first female Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services) at the University of Lagos. She is currently the 13th and first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos after 60 years of the University’s existence.  

She studied at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) for her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree, obtained a Masters' degree in Medical Microbiology with distinction at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and then proceeded to the University of Wales, College of Medicine, where she obtained both a diploma in Biomedical Techniques and a PhD in Medical. 

From 2004 to 2022, she directed the PEPFAR-sponsored HIV reference laboratory, responsible for the diagnosis and monitoring of over 20,000 HIV-infected patients. Professor Ogunsola is a mentor and advocate for women taking up leadership positions and has over 145 peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals. 

Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu-Sekyere

CHASS Representative

Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002 at the University of Ghana; and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education in 2004 at the University of Cape Coast. In 2012, he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership by Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan, USA, and trained as a high school principal. 

On 13th July 2003, he was ordained a Deacon and ordained as a Priest of the Catholic Church on 17th July 2004 in the Kumasi Archdiocese. 

He has held various leadership positions, including Domestic Bursar, helping Priest, resident Priest, Rector/Headmaster, and Chairman of the Kumasi Archdiocesan Pastoral Team from 2021-present. 

Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere is currently the Headmaster of Opoku Ware Senior High School and, since 2019, President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS). He is a member of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and Member of the Ghana Administrative and Finance Committee of WAEC.
