UG Grabs 33 Medals at 11th FASU Games in Lagos, Nigeria

The University of Ghana’s athletic prowess was on full display at the 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games held in Lagos, Nigeria, from the 20th - 29th September, 2024. The 11th Edition of the prestigious biennial event was co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Lagos State University (LASU). The competition brought together student-athletes from across the continent to compete in various sporting disciplines.

UG participated in six sporting disciplines: swimming, athletics, badminton, football, tennis and volleyball. Competing against 67 other universities from all over the African continent, UG student-athletes demonstrated their commitment and skills, ultimately securing an impressive 33 medals. These comprised 9 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze, recording the highest number of medals UG has ever won in a single international sports competition.

This remarkable medal haul placed UG first in athletics and Volleyball, and fourth overall in the tournament standings. UG emerged as the highest-ranked among the institutions from Ghana that participated in the competition. 

Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of Sports and Wellness at UG and leader of the delegation, expressed his pride in the team’s achievements. “The commitment of my coaches, staff and the discipline of our athletes have, once again, proven that the University of Ghana is a force to reckon with in university sports on the African continent. We have not only brought home medals but have also inspired the next generation of athletes,” he said.

The Head Coach of the Sports and Wellness Directorate, Mary Z. Yahaya echoed similar sentiments, praising the athletes for their hard work. “Our athletes gave their all in each competition. The training and preparation paid off, and we are very proud of their accomplishments. It is a clear indication of the quality of sports programmes we have at the University of Ghana,” she stated.

UG’s participation in the 11th FASU Games is a manifestation of the University’s commitment to promoting sports as a vital part of student life and development on campus. This year's performance has set the stage for even greater success in future competitions, with the team already setting its sights on the next edition of the Games scheduled to be held in Egypt in 2026.
