Chair of the University Council Visits Accra City and Korle-Bu Campuses

The Chair of the University Council, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd.) has embarked on a tour of the Accra City campus and the Korle-Bu campus. The tour was to afford the Council Chair the opportunity to familiarise herself with the facilities available on the two campuses of the University.

Justice Sophia Akuffo was accompanied by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research Innovation and Development, Prof.  Felix Asante, the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei Mensah and some Administrative Directors.

The tour began from the Mankata Avenue Airport, where the Council Chair and her entourage inspected a parcel of land and a residential flat belonging to the University. Mr. Charles Kofinti and Mr. Ernest Boakye, Director and Deputy Director of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) respectively, provided relevant information on the University’s properties throughout the tour.

The team then proceeded to the Accra City campus where they were warmly welcomed by the leadership of the campus led by the Principal, Prof. Joseph Yaro. The touring team were then, conducted around the facility and updated on the progress of the two building projects under construction. Upon completion, the projects would be used as a lecture theatre and an administrative block respectively.

Prof. Yaro indicated that in addition to the ongoing projects, there were plans to expand the facilities on the campus in order to increase enrollment to approximately 30,000 students. He also announced the decision to adopt the use of solar energy panels in generating electricity for the Accra City Campus. Prof. Yaro further made an appeal for support in completing the projects under construction.  Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd.) assured the Principal of Management's backing to address the challenges presented.

From the Accra City campus, the team visited the Korle-Bu campus. The Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. Julius Fobil, together with the College Secretary, Mr. Michael Apare-Atuah expressed delight at the visit by the Chair of Council. Some Deans of the constituent institutions of the College were also present to meet the visiting team. Prof. Fobil gave a brief background of the College while the Dean of Dental School, Prof. Ebenezer Anno-Nyako, led the team to inspect the facilities of the School. Prof. Anno-Nyako took the opportunity to present some of the challenges faced by the School to the Chair of Council, who in turn, promised to collaborate with Management to find solutions to the challenges. The entourage later toured some academic and residential facilities on the Campus.

At the end of the tour, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd.) lauded the efforts of the staff for their diligence in the performance of their duties, in spite of the prevailing challenges.

The tour marks the end of the Chair of the University Council’s familiarisation visit to the University. Earlier in the month, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd.) toured the Main Campus to get firsthand impression of the state of the University’s facilities.
