Confucius Institute Marks 15th UN Chinese Language Day

UG’s Confucius Institute hosted its 15th UN Chinese Language Day celebration themed, "Chinese Language: Connecting Cultures through the Bridge of Mutual Learning".

In his opening remarks, Professor Clement Appah, the Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute, emphasised the significance of language, highlighting its role in bringing people together, facilitating businesses and enabling relationships.

Professor Appah stated that the UN International Day of the Chinese Language serves as a reminder of the immense importance of the Chinese language, which is the single largest language in the world. He added that the Chinese language enables us to learn from each other, stressing that China has much to offer the world and is actively doing so. The pathway to accessing these offerings, he explained, is through learning the Chinese language.

He finally expressed his hope that this celebration would inspire people, especially children to learn the Chinese language.

In providing a brief history of the Day in his remarks, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, College Secretary for the College of Education, who represented the Registrar, gave a brief history of the UN Chinese Language Day which was established in 2010.

He articulated the university’s recognition of the importance of diversity and its impact on social inclusion processes. He further highlighted the University’s acknowledgement of the contributions of the Chinese language in shaping civilisations.

Mr. Nkansah concluded by extending the University’s felicitations to the UN for promoting initiatives that embrace diversity.

During his remarks, Lu Min Zhao, Acting Chief of the Political Section of the Chinese Embassy, pointed out that the UN designated April 20, as International Chinese Language Day to promote cultural diversity and engagement. He remarked that over the years, International Chinese Language Day has yielded tangible results and enhanced cultural values, boosting global ties and friendships.

There were Chinese proficiency and culture competitions at the elementary and university levels during the celebration.

Nyamedea Akua Akuokoh Acheampong of Rising Sun Montessori School and Habibatu Ibrahim from UG emerged winners at the elementary and university levels respectively. They both participated in singing competitions.

The sponsors of the event presented prizes to the participants as a token of appreciation.

Also in attendance were Prof. Wang Jimin, Chinese Director, Confucius Institute, UG; H.E. Anani Demuyakor, Ghana’s former Ambassador to China as well as staff and students of the University.
