The Doctoral Academy & Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability (C3SS) buildings have been inaugurated at the University of Ghana.  The buildings were jointly unveiled by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, and the PhD Coordinator and Director of the UG-Carnegie Projects, Prof.Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu at a brief and colourful ceremony.

Professor Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu, who gave a brief background of the two buildings indicated that the buildings demonstrated the importance the university places on developing human resources and expertise in climate change and sustainability development issues. She stated that   after winning a competitive grant of 1.6 million US Dollars from The Open Society Foundations (OSF) to implement a project, the OSF further funded the construction of the buildings to meet the expressed needs of Climate Change for Sustainable Development (CCSD) Students.

She said that the (C3SS) has nine offices which included office of the Director, secretarial staff and faculty, a data resource unit, as well as two large halls and seminar room for PhD students.  She mentioned that with such facilities, UG will be in a better position to contribute to capacity development to improve the Ghanaian and African voices in global climate change and sustainability dialogues.

The doctoral building, she said is another facility for PhD students whose greatest need in their studies beyond financial assistance was space.  She noted that the university recognises how essential graduate students are, thereby positioning them at a level that would help them realise their ambition. The building, which consists of reading rooms, seminar rooms, lecture halls a room for computer resource and a kitchenette will house the UG-Pan African Doctoral Academy and also provide space for PhD students. Prof. Ntiamoa-Baidu extolled the University for being the only university in Ghana and Africa that has a dedicated building for PhD students.

Professor Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu extended her appreciation to various coordinators, faculty members, stakeholders, the contractors and professionals at the University’s Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate, and other individuals for their immense contribution to the completion of this building.  She expressed hope that Ghanaian students and other students from West Africa would pursue PhD training to experience a conducive environment for learning.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, in his remarks expressed gratitude to the donors for their contribution to the completion of the building.  He also acknowledged  Prof. Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu’s efforts and said that not only did the buildings add to the infrastructural stock of the university but that they would help in sustaining and training PhD students as well as offer them the opportunity to research into the issue of climate change.
