Official Launch of Partnership to Promote West African Studies

 

The Centre for West African Studies of the University of Electronic Science and Technology, China (UESTC), in collaboration with some tertiary institutions in Ghana has officially   launched a partnership to promote West African Studies at the University of Ghana, Great Hall.

The partnership comprises five tertiary institutions, namely, University of Ghana (UG), University of Development Studies(UDS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Cape Coast (UCC), and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

In his welcome remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, applauded the institutions for being part of the partnership to promote West African Studies and stated that the partnership will enhance the University of Ghana’s vision to become a world class research-intensive university with identified research areas and intellectual exchange and collaborations across the various institutions to promote the partnership.   He projected that the partnership would further improve the relationship between the tertiary institutions in the partnership, while furthering research in various field of study, particularly in science and technology.

Professor Shen Xiarong, Vice-Chairman of the University Council (UESTC), in her remarks congratulated the tertiary institutions for their interest and also in supporting the establishment of the Centre for West African Studies (CWAS). She added that the creation of the Centre was aimed not only at the practice of China’s Philosophy and Social Science ‘‘Going Global’’ strategy, but the exploration of building international interdisciplinary research system and first class ‘think tank.’ She was hopeful that the joint efforts will yield more contributions and promote cooperation between China and West Africa.

An MOU was officially signed by the Vice-Chancellors to launch the partnership after which a workshop was held.
