Spanish Ambassador Pays Courtesy Call on Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo receives the Spanish Ambassador, H.E. Javier Gutiérrez 

The Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Javier Gutiérrez, has called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo. The purpose of the visit was to discuss future collaborations in specific areas of academic collaboration and access to Spanish business opportunities.

In brief remarks, H.E. Javier Gutiérrez stated that the University of Ghana has been a key partner of the Spanish cooperation for many years, and the aim of his visit was to strengthen the partnership. He mentioned the launch of scholarships for Ghanaian students and researchers, plans to revitalize the University’s Casa Hispanica with activities such as series of lectures, film festivals and other programmes to enable the students to get acquainted with the cultures of Latin America. H.E. Javier Gutiérrez also mentioned the Embassy’s engagement with the Spain-Ghana Chamber of Commerce to facilitate internships for Ghanaian students in order to offer them job opportunities.

Welcoming the Ambassador, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amfo, reiterated the University’s long-standing relations with Spain. She expressed delight at the Embassy’s desire to improve the existing traditional relations and expand it.  The Vice-Chancellor gave Ambassador Gutiérrez a brief overview of the University’s Colleges/Institutes and added that the University cherishes the scholarships and the internships as they enrich the overall student experiences.

“It is a fantastic idea! It is coming at a time where for the first time, the University is developing an internship policy; because we’ve realized that it is important that we are guided by policy, and we collaborate with industry in training our students”, she noted.

Prof. Amfo also looked forward to furthering the engagements with the Embassy through the relevant offices in the University.  She later presented the Ambassador with souvenirs from the University.

Present at the meeting were Ms. Maria Higon, Deputy Ambassador and Mrs. Mavis Osafo Adu, Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate.
