The University’s Biotechnology Centre has secured an amount of USD 3,070,000, from the African Development Bank to conduct research and other related programmes under the Ghana Government Post COVID-19 Skills Development and Productivity Enhancement Project (PSDPEP), supported by the Ministry of Finance.

The main objective of PSDPEP is to contribute to Ghana’s Post-Covid-19 recovery through infrastructure development to build health-related skills in higher education, restoration of livelihoods, and the creation of jobs among the youth and women. The grant will be used to support the acquisition of vital equipment for molecular biology, the construction of offices and laboratories, and the development of postgraduate programmes in Biotechnology.

The PSDPEP project, therefore, seeks to strengthen the Centre to deliver quality biotechnology services and serve as a hub for research, capacity building and community engagement for Ghana and the West Africa sub-region.

Under the project, the Biotechnology Centre will be resourced and capacitated to deliver the necessary research, training, and support for the various stakeholders. This will contribute to empowering institutions in the sub-region and creating other spillover effects into many other sectors of economies across Ghana and the sub-region.

The Biotechnology Centre was set up under the leadership of Prof.  Kwame Offei, the Principal Investigator, with funding from the Department for International Development (DFID), UK, through the Natural Resources Institute (NRI). Since its establishment in 1996, it has served as a major resource centre in provision of research support to units within the University in modern biological assays and techniques. Faculty and students from these units access facilities at the Centre for their research and training in molecular techniques. The Centre also receives faculty and students from other collaborative institutions.
