University of Ghana Celebrates Pensioners and 2018 Retirees

Annually, the University dedicates a day to celebrate employees who are retiring at the end of the academic year. This year’s event which took place at the Poolside of the Sports Directorate was particularly significant because it brought together not only current retirees but also extended an invitation to all pensioners of the University as part of activities to commemorate its 70th anniversary.

The Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Aisha who welcomed the retirees expressed Management’s gratitude to them for their dedicated service and immeasurable contribution to the University and extended best wishes for a continuous health and fulfilling retirement.

In the same vein, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice-Chancellor of the University, congratulated the retirees and paid glowing tribute to them for their selfless contribution to the work of the University. He assured retirees of Management’s support during the retirement period and advised that they take good care of themselves to ensure long life with good health.

The 2018 retirees received certificates of appreciation indicating their years of service.  All pensioners and the current retirees together with their guests were treated to sumptuous African and continental dishes alongside soothing musical interludes.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Yaw Twumasi, Chairman of Council, congratulated all the retirees and appealed to other staff to work hard to enable the University achieve its mission and vision. He further urged all fresh retirees to be active members of the University of Ghana Pensioners Association (UGPA).

The various employees associations; University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), representing academic senior members, Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) representing the administrative/professional senior members, Federation of Universities Senior Staff Associations of Ghana  (FUSSAG) representing the senior staff and the Teachers Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU) representing the junior staff delivered messages of felicitations to their members.

Mr. E. A. Asagba, Chairman of the University of Ghana Pensioners Association congratulated all retirees on their contributions to the development of the University. He advised all retires to adopt a healthy lifestyle and appealed to management to help renovate their office. This he said will help them organise meetings and run the affairs of the association in comfort. He also expressed profound gratitude to management for bringing all retirees together once again.

A total of 154 employees proceeded on retirement. This consisted 36 senior members, 56 senior staff and 62 junior staff. Approximately 1300 participants, comprising pensioners of the University and their guests attended the event.
