University Of Ghana Holds 2017 Matriculation

The University of Ghana has held the 2017 Matriculation ceremony to welcome newly enrolled students into programmes for the 2017/18 academic year.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, who presided over the ceremony, in his address, challenged freshmen and women to do more to achieve the ultimate goal of academic success and project the good brand of the University during their stay.

Prof. Owusu Oduro noted that for the 2017/2018 academic year the University received a total of 48,728 applications, made up of 41,447 undergraduate and 7,281 graduate applications. Out of this number, the University was able to offer admission to 27,239 students made up of 23,041 undergraduate and 4,198 graduate students.  Out of the number of undergraduate applicants offered admission, 10,289 had registered at the time of matriculation.  With respect to graduate admissions, 3,107 registered for the 2017/18 academic year.  A total of 745 students of various nationalities made up of 530 undergraduate and 215 graduate students pursuing various programmes enrolled as international students. 

The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to donors who support some students through the Students Financial Aid Office and encouraged other corporate bodies to assist students with financial needs through the Students Financial Aid Office, whose education is likely to be interrupted due to financial constraints.

Earlier, the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, in a welcome statement, noted that the 2017/18 academic year recorded the largest number of matriculants in the University.  She indicated that another Matriculation ceremony would be held for students in the Distance Education Programme, Sandwich programmes, and other programmes. Mrs. Haizel-Ashia later administered the Matriculation Oath to confer membership status on the new students in line with Article 31 of the University of Ghana Act 2010; Act 806. She commended the matriculants for signing their Matriculation Oath electronically ahead of the ceremony as was required.

Ms. Maame Ama Saah Mensah, a student from the College of Humanities, and a resident of Jean Nelson Aka Hall, delivered a speech on “Expectations of University life” on behalf of fresh-men and women.   She pointed out some of the challenges during the online registration and selection of residences, and said she was hopeful things would be better in the next academic year. She encouraged her colleagues to plan and live a responsible campus-life in the coming years to prepare them to graduate with honours.  Ms. Saah Mensah later signed the Matricula on behalf of her colleague freshmen and women.

The Matriculation ceremony was attended by officials of the University including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Kwame Offei, Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of the Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID), Prof. Francis Dodoo, Provosts of the Colleges, Deans and Directors, Heads of Departments and Halls, as well as other members of Convocation.  A number of parents and guardians also witnessed the ceremony.
