Ahead of this, a fundraising ceremony was held at the Vice Chancellor’s Residence recently. Her Ladyship the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, Justice Jones Dotse, a Justice of the Supreme Court, Prof. Akua Kuenyehia, former First Vice-President of the ICC, The Hague, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba, members of the Diplomatic Corps and officials of the University were among the dignitaries who attended the ceremony.
Welcoming the guests, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said, he was happy the 27th African Moot Court Competition was being hosted by University of Ghana during the 70th anniversary of the University. He said the University was proud of its serene environment, and was desirous to sustain a clean environment. He pledged management’s support to ensure a successful event.

The Dean of the School of Law, Prof. K. Quashigah in his introductory remarks, said it was a privilege for the School of Law to host the 27th Moot Court Competition. He recalled the strides made by students from the School of Law in bringing honour to the University through the Moot competition. He said that the ceremony was not only to raise funds but to formally inform all stakeholders of the upcoming competition and to solicit their support.
The Deputy Director for the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, Mr. Norman Taku expressed his appreciation to the University for accepting to host the competition. He gave a brief history of the African Moot Court Competition which he said started in Africa 26 years ago. In reiterating the strengths of the Moot Court, he said wherever the Moot goes, “it brings a message, it generates awareness and it kindles debate and discussion. It leaves no one indifferent.”
Delivering the Keynote address, the former First Vice-President of ICC, Hague, Her Excellency Prof. Mrs. Akua Kuenyehia, who is also a former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana, gave a detailed description of the programme line up for the competition. She also stated that the University of Ghana has hosted the competition twice. She paid tribute to the School of Law and students who had participated in the programme and enabled the University to win the competition three times, in 2008, 2009 and 2017. While calling for support from individual and corporate bodies, Prof. Kuenyehia also indicated that there were attractive packages to benefactors and mentioned that this will be publicized widely.
The Chairman of the University of Ghana Moot Planning Committee is Dr. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, Senior Lecturer at the School of Law.
