University of Ghana Signs MoU with Bui Power Authority

The University of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bui Power Authority to conduct feasibility studies for the construction of a 2.5 megawatt of solar farm for the University of Ghana.

Prof. Boateng Onwona Agyeman, Dean, School of Engineering Sciences, College of Basic and applied Sciences, in introductory remarks, explained the rationale behind the partnership.  He said the MoU was specifically to grant access to Bui Power Authority to conduct feasibility studies which will lead to the construction of a 2.5 megawatt solar farm for the University of Ghana. He said that, at the end of the exercise, the reports of the feasibility studies which will include technical details of the proposed project, the scope of work that will be done, the design of the 2.5 megawatt solar farm, the implementation plan, and the financial model will be made available for the next phase to commence.

Prof. Francis Dodoo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development), who presided over the ceremony, said he was elated with the partnership between the University of Ghana and Bui Power Authority (BPA) and expressed appreciation to BPA.  He was hopeful that the project when completed, would complement and reduce power being used by the university.

Mr Fred Oware, Chief Executive Officer of the Bui Power Authority, in a brief remarks said, discussions towards the commencement of the project took off about a year ago. "We find it necessary to sign the MoU because we are now about to conduct the various studies needed to be done, before doing the actual project," he said. He noted that without the MoU, it was going to be impossible for the Authority to commit resources to the project and therefore lauded the efforts put in by university authorities in ensuring that an MoU was signed.

The MoU was signed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, Prof. Francis Dodoo, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Bui Dam Authority, Mr Fred Oware.

Officials of the University who attended the ceremony were Prof. Andrew Anthony Adjei, Coordinator, Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Teams, Prof. Daniel B. Sarpong, Dean, School of Agriculture; Prof. Olivia Anku-Tsede, Legal  Counsel; Mr. Charles Kofinti, Director, Physical Development and Municipal Services, Dr. Ebenezer Owusu, Department of Plant and Environmental Biology and Mrs. Stella A. Amoa. Director of Public Affairs.

Officials from BPA were Mr. Anthony Boye Osafo-Kissi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Engineering; Mr. Kwaku Sarpong Akosa, Deputy Director, Engineering Services; Mr. Franklin Nana Addai, Assistant Manager, Legal; Mr. Peter Acheampong, Manager Renewables; and  Mr. Mawuli Kwadzovia, Public Relations Officer.
