UNIVERSITY OF GHANA SUSTAINS HIGH RANKING AMONG GLOBAL PEERS

The University of Ghana has been ranked in the 151 - 200 band on the Times Higher Education’s Golden Age University Ranking for the second consecutive year. The Golden Age ranking uses the same methodology as the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings but focuses on the best universities established during the “Golden Age” i.e. between 50 to 80 years ago.

This year’s Golden Age ranking reflects what Times Higher Education (THE) describes as the “Golden age in global higher education”, characterized by rapid university expansion and increasing investment in research. 308 universities were featured in this year’s ranking whereas 271 universities participated last year.

University of Ghana has been generally ranked higher than its global peers established around the same time, including universities from Europe, Asia, Latin America and the United States of America. For example, University of Ghana ranked ahead of 3 universities in the United States of America, 19 European universities, 86 universities in Asia and 27 universities in Latin America.

This year’s rankings were based on 2016/2017 academic year data for computing comparative outputs other than publication and citation data. The analyzed university outputs include research income, academic staff numbers/doctoral degree ratio, international/domestic student ratio, international/domestic academic staff ratio, income from industry and total institutional income.

The publication and citation data reflecting the scholarly works of University of Ghana’s researchers between 2014 and 2019 were extracted from Elsevier’s Scopus database. The scores for the University of Ghana were as follows: Teaching, 15.6% (up from 14.5% last year); Research, 15.5% (up from 13.5% last year); Citations, 28.1% (up from 23.8% last year); Industry Income, 48.0% (up from 42.2% last year); and International Outlook, 49.5% (up from 48.8% last year).

Since 2004, Times Higher Education has provided trusted performance data on universities for students and their families, university academics, university leaders, governments and industry, with universities measured across their teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

University of Ghana is the only Ghanaian university that met Times Higher Education’s competitive criteria for participating in this ranking.
