University of Ghana Tops International Rankings

The University of Ghana ended 2022 on a glorious note, with the latest Webometrics ranking, placing UG as the best tertiary institution in Ghana.

Webometrics, places the University of Ghana as first in Ghana, 12th in Sub-Saharan Africa and 1,124 in the world - out of 31,000 higher education institutions from more than 200 countries.

In related news, the University of Ghana has again been ranked the highest tertiary institution in Ghana by the Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index 2023 World Scientist and University Rankings. Additionally, the AD Scientific Index 2023 named Dr. Dwomoa Adu, a Senior Research Fellow in the University of Ghana Medical School, College of Health Sciences, as the best scientist in Ghana, out of the 3,000 academics featured.

The indicators for the Webometrics ranking are impact (web contents impact), openness (top cited researchers) and excellence (top cited papers).

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the ‘Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas’ (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities all over the world.

The aim of the Webometrics Ranking is to promote web publication, supporting open access initiatives and electronic access to scientific publications and other academic materials. The Rankings, which began in 2004, is updated every January and July and provides Web indicators for universities worldwide.

In the current Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index 2023 rankings, the top 20 University of Ghana scientists are Dr. Dwomoa Adu, University of Ghana Medical School; Professor Daniel Adjei Boakye Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research; Professor Ernest Aryeetey (Former Vice-Chancellor) - the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research; Professor Joshua Yindenaba Abor (Former Dean of the University of Ghana Business School); Professor Dorothy Yeboah Manu (Director of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research); Professor Robert Ebo Hinson (Former Head, Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, UGBS); Professor Isabella Quakyi, former Dean of the School of Public Health); Professor Philip Baba Adongo, Head, Department of Social and Behavioural Science, School of Public Health; Professor Julius Fobil, Provost College of Health Sciences; Professor Kwasi Torpey, Dean School of Public Health and Professor Peter Quartey, Director, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research.

The assessment procedure for ranking the 3,000 Ghanaian scientists and their scientific studies was based on the total and the last five-year productivity coefficients of scientists and their Google citations.
