Vice-Chancellor Visits Bolgatanga Learning Centre

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and other Senior University Officials paid a working visit to the Bolgatanga Learning Centre on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.  The purpose of the visit was to interact with the Centre Co-ordinator and staff to gain first-hand insight into their activities.

After the introductions of both teams, the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe declared the purpose of the gathering. He touched on the Vice-Chancellor's longstanding desire to visit the Bolgatanga Learning Centre, noting that she had previously visited the Centres in other regions. He urged staff to share both the prospects and challenges of the Centre during the discussion session.

In her initial remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed her excitement about the visit, emphasising the University of Ghana's nationwide presence and commitment to maintaining high standards. She stressed the importance of understanding the unique circumstances of each geographical area.

The Centre Co-ordinator, Dr. Samuel Nuamah Eshun, welcomed the Vice-Chancellor and her delegation, expressing the staff's enthusiasm about her visit. He updated her on the progress of the building project and concerns about delays on the part of the contractor. He was optimistic about increased enrolment with the extension of the Education courses to the Distance Education programme but highlighted the need for improved facilities for effective teaching and learning.

Some concerns raised by staff members included the lack of uniforms for security personnel, the need for a new vehicle for the Centre, completion of renovation work on the academic facility and laptops for examinations.

In brief remarks, Prof. Justice N. Bawole, the Dean of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) emphasised the importance of maintaining quality and suggested engaging students more closely to understandthe Univers. He announced that the UGBS would donate computers to the Centre.

Mrs. Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, Director of Academic Affairs urged staff to encourage students to take pride in their affiliation with the University and assured them of industry recognition upon completion.

The Centre Co-ordinator noted the competitive landscape regarding the nursing programme and the demand for graduate programmes in the Region.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of revenue generation as well as the potential market for nursing programmes and the need for expansion of graduate programmes. She commended the staff for their dedication and teamwork.

Additionally, she urged staff to pursue personal academic development and notify the University of their intentions to upgrade, while also encouraging the Centre to liaise with the College in linking students to the various support services.

Prof. Amfo promised some laptops to support examinations and concluded the visit with an inspection of the building refurbishment project. She admonished the Contractor to speed up and ensure the work done is of high quality.
