Ghana Tourism Development Company Partners with UG to Position Legon as a Tourist Destination

Preliminary discussions have begun to firmly place the University of Ghana (UG) on Ghana’s tourism map through a strategic partnership with the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC). The collaboration aims to position the Legon campus as an official tourist destination, showcasing its cultural, historical and academic heritage.

At a recent stakeholder meeting, Prof. Kobby Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of GTDC, emphasised the need for a structured framework that would integrate Legon into Ghana’s tourism offerings. “This initiative will help diversify the experiences available to both local and international tourists,” he noted, assuring that GTDC remains committed to providing both technical and financial support to make the project a reality.

Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs at UG, welcomed the proposal, highlighting its potential to set the University apart as a premier destination for educational and cultural tourism. “Through this initiative, Legon could become one of the rare university campuses in Africa to be officially included in national tourism policy,” she said.

The partnership underscores the University’s efforts to strengthen engagement with key stakeholders and promote innovative strategies for resource mobilisation and visibility enhancement.
