Department of Sociology Names Graduate Seminar Room in Honour of Emeritus Professor Godwin Kwaku Nukunya

The Department of Sociology has officially renamed its Graduate Seminar Room as the Emeritus Professor Godwin Kwaku Nukunya Graduate Seminar Room, in honour of the late scholar. This is in recognition of his significant contributions as a pioneering sociologist, anthropologist, educator and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University.

At a brief commissioning ceremony, Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Presidential Envoy on Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, who represented the Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Julius Debrah, noted that the late Professor’s works continue to educate and inspire the current generation. He described the naming of the seminar room after the distinguished scholar as a fitting recognition of his lasting contribution.

In his address, Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Joseph Awetori Yaro, described the gesture as a reflection of the University’s commitment to its first Strategic Priority of delivering a transformative student experience. He expressed strong support for the decision, noting that it would enrich the academic environment for current and future generations of scholars.

The gesture also reflects the University’s commitment to recognising and honouring faculty and staff whose contributions have helped shape the institution and advance its mission. It preserves the memory and work of distinguished scholars such as Professor Nukunya while inspiring future generations to build on the foundations laid by those who came before them.

The refurbished seminar room will serve as a dedicated space for graduate seminars and scholarly discussions, ensuring that Professor Nukunya’s intellectual legacy remains actively present in the life of the Department.
