UG Advances Digital Literacy Through Donation of Refurbished Computers to Selected Basic and Second-Cycle Schools
The Office of the Registrar has facilitated and donated 79 refurbished desktop computers to some selected basic and second-cycle institutions. They include the University Basic School, Legon; University Staff Village Basic School; Danfa Technical Institute; and three schools in the Ketu South Municipal District namely Denu RC School, Chicago School and Three Town Senior High School.
At a brief ceremony, Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah explained that the gesture reflects the University’s commitment to educational development and its belief in the transformative power of technology. As Ghana’s premier university, she noted, the institution is guided by a strategic plan that prioritises engagement and partnerships as well as sustainable resource mobilisation and stewardship.
‘This donation serves as a practical demonstration of these priorities by strengthening relationships with surrounding communities, basic schools and second-cycle institutions across the country,’ Mrs. Agyei-Mensah added.
She further advised the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the computers by exploring, learning, creating and stretching their abilities, while developing IT skills that will equip them for future opportunities in the digital age. “Technology can open countless doors,” she noted, “but it is your curiosity, discipline and determination that will carry you through them.”
Togbi Baku IV, Dufia of Denu, capital of Ketu South expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiary communities. He noted that the computers would significantly strengthen ICT education in the area and expand learning opportunities for young people.
Samuel Nyarkotey Quao from the Danfa Technical Institute explained that the school had previously petitioned for support from various institutions but to no avail. The University’s intervention, he added, would enhance practical teaching and learning at the institute.

Elizabeth Agamah, Head of the Junior High School at the University Staff Village Basic School expressed appreciation for the contribution, stating that the donation would greatly improve practical ICT lessons. She highlighted that the equipment would help teachers deliver hands-on instruction and support the new curriculum’s emphasis on digital skills.
On his part, Mr. Eric Sefa, Acting Head of the University Basic School also thanked the University for the generosity, stressing that the availability of modern computers would strengthen problem-solving, research and technology-based learning across all levels of the school.
This initiative reinforces the University of Ghana’s dedication to extending educational opportunities, promoting digital literacy and advancing meaningful partnerships with institutions across the country.
