Family of the Late Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed Formally Informs UG Management of His Passing
Management of the University of Ghana has received an official delegation from the family of the late Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed, popularly called Alhaji, to formally announce his passing and funeral arrangements.
The delegation comprised family members, the Madina Dagomba Chief, Alhaji Issah Abdulai, representatives of the UG Muslim community and staff of Radio Univers. Alhaji, the immediate past Manager of Radio Univers (105.7FM), passed away on February 16, 2026.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (RID), Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Alhaji as an integral member of the University community whose impact extended far beyond the University of Ghana campus.
He recalled Alhaji’s unwavering commitment to the university, noting his instrumental role in supporting university programmes and initiatives, particularly in media and communications. He described the late broadcaster as passionate, meticulous and dedicated.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Gordon Awandare, added, “He was always thinking about how to support young people and how to improve the university. His loss is a huge loss to the entire university community.”
The Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, also paid tribute, highlighting Dr. Ahmed’s constant engagement with university leadership and his readiness to offer constructive advice on institutional matters. She noted that many leading figures in Ghana’s media landscape benefited from his mentorship, describing him as a leader who invested selflessly in developing young journalists without seeking public recognition.
The Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, who moderated the meeting, recounted the smooth working relationship between the Directorate and Radio Univers during Dr. Sidick’s tenure as Station Manager.
The family informed management that the final funeral rites will be held on March 29, 2026, following the earlier three-day Islamic funeral observances and in consideration of the Ramadan period. University management pledged its support and indicated readiness to participate fully in the final rites.
The late Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed joined the University of Ghana in April 1998 and was posted to Radio Univers, where he rose through the ranks and became the Station Manager in January 2004. During his time as Station Manager, he transformed the Station and trained many student volunteers who now play prominent roles in key media organisations across the country.
In 2022, Dr. Ahmed was promoted to the rank of Deputy Registrar.
He retired in July 2023, but was granted post-retirement from August 2023 to
December 2024.
Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026 at the
