University of Ghana to Unveil New Vision and Strategic Priorities to Achieve Global Impact

The University of Ghana, Ghana's premier institution of higher learning is excited to announce the launch of a new vision and strategic priorities, which will see the University direct attention to transforming lives and societies through unparalleled scholarship, innovation and result-oriented discoveries.
This strategic direction will guide the University over the next five years (2024-2029) and will help reinforce the University’s commitment to excellence and global impact.
The launch event will take place on 17th July, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Great Hall and will have in attendance the Chancellor of the University, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, the Chair of the University Council, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia A.B. Akuffo (Rtd), the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and other senior officials, faculty and administrative staff, students, partners and collaborators from across Ghana and the international community.
New Vision and Strategic Priorities
The University of Ghana's new vision focuses on achieving global impact through innovative research, teaching, and learning, using a technology-driven and people-centered approach. This vision is anchored on five strategic pillars:
- Transformative Student Experience
- Impactful Research
- Commitment to Our Faculty and Staff
- Engagement and Partnerships
- Sustainable Research Mobilisation and Stewardship
These pillars reflect the University's dedication to sustainability, diversity and inclusion, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of academic and research excellence on the global stage.
In addition to the launch of the new Strategic Plan, three other critical documents will be outdoored to chart the course for the University’s future development. These include the Revised Statutes, Research Strategy and Manual on Human Resource Management and Administrative Policies and Procedures.
“We have been on a fruitful 10-year journey which has seen us make significant strides in our world-class research-intensive drive," says Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.
“Now is the time for us to enhance our global impact, building on the solid foundation that has been laid. This also means that we are renewing our commitment to excellence in all aspects of our mission. In the next five years, guided by this Strategic Plan, the University will be seeking to elevate and provide a transformative student experience, enhance impactful research and build robust engagements and partnerships. I, therefore, invite all our internal, external and international partners to share in our vision and support the cause”, she adds.

BRIEF INFORMATION ON DOCUMENTS TO BE OUTDOORED
1. Revised Statutes
In March 2024, the University Council approved the revised Statutes, as recommended by the Academic Board. The revised Statutes are designed to align with current and emerging national and university-level policies and laws, including the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), the UG Act 2010 (Act 806), and the new UG Strategic Plan (2024-2029).
These revisions promote clarity in interpretation, incorporate broad stakeholder consultations and consider the future trajectory of tertiary education in Ghana. The goal is to ensure that the Statutes are robust and enduring, supporting the University's mission and vision.
2. Research Strategy
The University Council approved the University of Ghana Research Strategy in December 2023. This strategy outlines the vision and goals for research, harmonising research collaboration across thematic areas within the University. Aligned with the UG Research Policy, it lays emphasis on resource mobilisation, global outreach and capacity building.
The strategy identifies seven priority research areas, including infectious and non-communicable diseases, food production and processing, climate change adaptation, development policy, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution tools. It also integrates cross-cutting issues such as nature-based solutions, gender, diversity, social inclusion and engagement with industry and external stakeholders.
3. Manual on Human Resource Management and Administrative Policies and Procedures
In April 2024, the University Council approved the Manual on Human Resource Management and Administrative Policies and Procedures (HR Manual). This comprehensive reference document provides clear guidelines on human resource administration, aligning with recent laws, policies and the new University Statutes.
Key amendments include the revision of organograms, alignment with the collegiate system of governance, and benchmarking against national and international standards. The HR Manual serves as a vital resource for the University community, consolidating all conditions of service documents for various categories of employees.
