The University of Ghana’s Accra City Campus recently hosted the Second Interdisciplinary Student Workshop themed “Water and Health,” bringing together students and faculty from the University of Ghana and the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Environment for a day of dialogue, learning and practical engagement.
The workshop focused on the critical intersection of water systems, health and environmental sustainability, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and international collaboration in addressing global challenges.
Held at the School of Public Health, the event featured remarks from the Principal of the Accra City Campus, Prof. Clement Appah, who underscored the value of international academic partnerships in fostering innovation and developing solutions to complex societal issues.
The opening session included presentations by senior University of Ghana officials, among them Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs and Prof. Jemima Anderson, Dean of the International Programmes Office. Participants were also introduced to the objectives and structure of the workshop by Alexa Bennett, Instructor in Systems Studies in Environment, Water and Health at the University of Waterloo.
A key highlight of the programme was a field visit to Sesa Recycling in Accra, where participants gained firsthand insight into waste management practices and their implications for water quality and public health. The experience offered students an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world environmental challenges and solutions.
The workshop also featured collaborative group activities and student presentations, allowing participants to share innovative ideas and perspectives on water systems and their impact on health, communities and livelihoods.

The event concluded with a guided tour of the University of Ghana campus, providing the visiting students and faculty with an opportunity to experience the University's academic environment and cultural heritage.
