University Basic School, Legon, Wins CSIR Quiz for Third Consecutive Year

The University Basic School (UBS), Legon, has once again demonstrated its academic excellence by emerging overall winner of the 2026 Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Food Research Institute Quiz Competition, scoring 70 points to triumph over three other participating schools.

The competition, held at the CSIR–Food Research Institute’s Conference Hall at Shiashie, Accra, formed part of activities commemorating World Food Day, observed annually on 16 October.

UBS finished ahead of Christ the King International School, which scored 63 points, The Ridge Church School with 50 points, and Armed Forces Basic School with 47 points.

The victory marks an impressive third consecutive win for UBS, which first participated in the competition in 2024 and has maintained its winning record in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 editions.

The School’s success reflects a combination of purposeful preparation, dedicated coaching and effective classroom instruction. The selected learners underwent two weeks of intensive preparation covering general science, basic mathematics, current affairs, general knowledge and CSIR’s contributions to national development.

Their experience from previous editions also provided valuable insights into the competition format and likely subject areas. In addition, the learners’ regular exposure to quality classroom teaching, particularly in Mathematics and Science, helped them confidently apply concepts they had encountered in their lessons.

The 2026 team comprised eight Basic Eight learners: Abena Oppomea Ossei Kwakye, Aseda Oye Dartey, Joanel Lamptey, Amarteikai Amarquaye, Karis Heward-Mills, Millchelle Antwi, Jonas Dodge and Kwame Asomantse.

The achievement recognises the sustained commitment of the teachers who have coached the UBS quiz team since 2024: Mr. Anthony Amoah Baidoo, Mr. Enoch Lamptey and Mr. Ebenezer Ocran. The team received additional support from Ms. Ethel Agyemang during the 2026 edition.

Since its first participation in 2024, UBS has competed against several established schools, including Achimota Basic School, PRESEC Staff Basic School, La Bawaleshie Basic School, The Ridge Church School, Christ the King International School and Armed Forces Basic School.

Expressing his excitement, the current Board Chair of the University Basic School, Prof. Collins Badu Agyemang, commended the coaches for their commitment to preparing the learners and congratulated the students on their discipline, confidence and outstanding performance. He also acknowledged the School’s leadership and staff for their contributions to creating an environment that supports effective teaching, learning and academic achievement.

Prof. Agyemang urged the entire school community to build on this remarkable accomplishment and continue enhancing the strength of the School.

Beyond the trophy and recognition, UBS’s achievement underscores the value of strong classroom instruction, dedicated teachers, teamwork and opportunities for learners to demonstrate their abilities beyond the classroom.

The School’s consistent performance also reinforces the importance of investing in co-curricular activities that develop critical thinking, confidence, intellectual curiosity and healthy academic competition.
