Wear UG Day 2025 Unites UG Community in Fashion, Pride and Professionalism

"Wear UG Day 2025” was met with great enthusiasm and pride, highlighting UG’s values of integrity, commitment, respect and loyalty. This year's event was held under the theme "Living the Legacy through Professionalism and Self-Expression."

Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the University wore their creatively designed costumes made with the UG@75 cloth. 

The celebration culminated in an event which featured a panel discussion, an employee fashion competition as well as a photo shoot session. 

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, beautifully clad in her UG print costume highlighted that the "Wear UG" campaign represents professionalism, identity, and unity among the university community and goes beyond fashion. ‘What started during the 75th anniversary in 2023 and has since grown into a movement that supports pride and group identity.’

Emphasising the theme, "Living the Legacy Through Professionalism and Self-Expression," Professor Amfo encouraged staff, students and alumni to embody UG's principles of excellence, authenticity and innovation by striking a balance between professionalism and individuality.

In brief remarks, the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, encouraged staff, students, and alumni to wear the University of Ghana brand proudly and represent it positively both on and off campus.

Panel Discussion

A panel discussion, moderated by Rev. Dr. Sarah Dorgbadzi, Senior Lecturer, Department of Theatre Arts, School of Performing Arts, explored the theme "Wear UG: Living the Legacy Through Professionalism and Self-Expression." The panelists were Prof. Matilda Asante, Associate Professor of Dietetics, UG; Oheneba Yaw Boamah, CEO of Abrantie the Gentleman; Dr. Gladys Setordzie, Clinical Psychologist/ Senior Counsellor at the UG Careers and Counselling Directorate, Ms. Gladys Alantiya, President of the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana (SSAoUG) and Mr. Ebo Nyamekye Allen-Koufie, an HR professional.

The discussion highlighted the importance of dressing professionally and its impact on perception, mental health and self-esteem. They asserted that professional grooming boosts confidence which attracts respect and career prospects.

Employee Fashion Show Competition

The event also featured a fashion show, where participants, all UG staff, showcased creative designs made from UG fabric. The designs were judged based on creativity, innovation and professionalism, and the winners were awarded prizes.

Out of 14 participants and after much anticipation, Baba Hamidu, a Principal Library Assistant at the Biochemistry Department Library was crowned the overall winner of the 2025 Wear UG Day fashion show for his outstanding creativity and craftsmanship. He walked away with a certificate, a hamper from sponsors and a cash prize of GHS2000.

Diana Abena Adom Mensah, a Principal Administrative Assistant from the Institute of African Studies emerged as the 1st runner-up, while Gifty Naa-Shikah Solomon, a Librarian from the College of Health Sciences walked away as the 2nd runner-up. They also received certificates, hampers from sponsors, as well as a cash prize of GHS1500 and GHS1000 respectively. 

All contestants also received certificates and hampers from sponsors as a token of appreciation for their hard work and inventiveness. 

The "Wear UG Day" celebration is an act of preserving the university's heritage through fashion.
